ETHNICITYTG (V131TG) differs across samples in the number of response categories. IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for this variable to incorporate the additional codes only sometimes available. All these additional codes share a common first digit of "4," with the second digit providing specific detail (e.g., code "41" for Ana-ife).
Comparability - Standard DHS
ETHNICITY (V131) is a country-specific variable included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 2 forward, with no standard wording or response categories.
In the 1998 and 2013 Togo surveys, the first category includes Mina, as well as Adja-Ewe. In the 1988 Togo survey, the first category includes Adja-Ewe only.
In the 1988 Togo survey, the third category includes only Para-Gourma. In the 1998 and 2013 Togo surveys, the third category includes Para-Gourma and Akan.
