Description
For men who are not currently married or living with a woman, EVERMARRIEDMN (MV535) reports the manâs relationship history as "No [never married/in union]" or "Formerly married" or "Lived with a woman."

Comparability
Along with universe differences, EVERMARRIEDMN (MV535) has some differences in question wording. Most early samples ask, "Have you ever been married or lived with a man?" Later samples ask, "Have you ever been married or lived together with a woman as if married?"
Further variations in question wording are noted below.
To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for this variable. The answer "No" is coded 0. For men who report having ever been married or lived with a woman, IPUMS-DHS uses a 2-digit coding system, where the first digit indicates whether the male respondent was ever formerly married or lived with a woman (code 10). The second digit indicates whether the male respondent was formerly married (code 11), lived with a woman (code 12), or both formerly married and lived with a woman (code 13).

EVERMARRIEDMN (MV535) is based on a question in the standard DHS questionnaire, with the words "as if married" added to "lived with a woman" beginning in Phase V.
