FCNORM indicates whether female circumcision was practiced in the woman's community.
GENERAL |
Kenya |
Tanzania |
There are question wording differences in FCNORM that may affect comparability. In most samples, the question is similar to the following: "In this/your community, is female circumcision practiced?"
Samples with markedly different text are discussed below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
FCNORM is included in neither the standard DHS questionnaire nor in the three versions of the standard DHS module on female circumcision.
The Kenyan surveys for 1998 and 2003 use the following opening text before the standard wording for this variable: "In many communities, girls are introduced to womanhood by participating in some ceremonies and undergoing specific procedures. Now, I want to discuss with you the circumcision of girls."
The Tanzania 1996 survey asks whether women are circumcised in "the area," rather than in "the community."
