Codes and Frequencies
Description
For women who have at least one circumcised daughter, FCTOOLDAU reports what tool was used to cut the daughter's genitals during female circumcision.
The related variable FCTOOL reports the type of tool used in the woman respondent's own circumcision.
Comparability
Along with universe differences, FCTOOLDAU differs across samples in response categories. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for this variable. For example, all samples share a first digit of "1" for the common response "blade/razor," while the second digit provides additional detail when available (e.g., "own blade/razor" as code "11").
Comparability - Standard DHS
FCTOOLDAU is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire or in any of the three versions of the standard DHS module on female genital cutting.
Universe
- Egypt 1995: Ever-married women age 15-49 who have at least one living daughter that is circumcised.
- Kenya 1998: Women age 15-49 whose eldest living daughter is circumcised.
