Description
FPEMRGPRIVTRAD indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported a private traditional healer as where she acquired emergency contraception.
Some samples in the "FPEMRG" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of private traditional healers that could be combined in FPEMRGPRIVTRAD to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in this variable.

Comparability
FPEMRGPRIVTRAD varies slightly in question wording. Most commonly, this response category is organized under the "Private Sector" header and is worded as "private traditional healer." Some countries diverge from this standard convention, and, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
FPEMRGPRIVTRAD is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS women's questionnaire.
Comparability — India [top]
In the 2019 India survey, under the "Private Sector" header, there are two separate categories for "private traditional healer," and "private AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy)." Because FPEMRGPRIVTRAD focuses on all private traditional healers, these two responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:
- Private traditional healer is listed as FPEMRGIA10 in IPUMS-DHS
- Private AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) is listed as FPEMRGIA11 in IPUMS-DHS
