Description
FPEVUSECAL (V302A) indicates whether the woman had ever used a family planning method, and, if so, whether she used a method in the period covered by the calendar or prior to the start of the calendar. The standard DHS questionnaire includes a calendar of births, pregnancies, and contraceptive use, which typically includes the 5 years prior to a given interview.
IPUMS-DHS users may also be interested in FPEVUSE, a constructed variable that reports whether the respondent ever used contraception and, if so, whether modern methods or only traditional or folkloric methods were used.
Comparability
Apart from slight universe differences, FPEVUSECAL (V302A) is largely comparable across samples. Most commonly, this question is worded as "Have you ever used anything or tried in any way to delay or avoid getting pregnant?"
Comparability - Standard DHS
FPEVUSECAL (V302A) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 6 forward.
