Description

FPEVUSEMRG indicates whether the woman had ever used emergency contraception to delay or avoid a pregnancy. The complementary variable FPKNOEMRG indicates whether the woman knew about emergency contraception as a method for family planning.

Comparability

Apart from slight universe differences and variation in how this contraceptive method was labelled and described, FPEVUSEMRG is largely comparable across samples. This response category was most commonly worded as "Emergency contraception," while some French-language surveys refer to "pilule du lendemain," which roughly translates to "morning after pill." Additionally, some samples state that emergency contraception can be administered up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse to avoid pregnancy, while other samples say only up to 3 days.

IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Survey Text tab for the exact question wording for samples of interest.

Comparability - Standard DHS

Although questions on whether the woman has used a given contraceptive method are included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phases 1 to Phase 5 and in all phases of the standard recode manual, FPEVUSEMRG is a country-specific response category that is not included in any of the standard DHS modules.
