Description

FPEVUSTRAD indicates whether the woman had ever used some "other" unspecified folkloric method to delay or avoid a pregnancy. The complementary variable FPKNOTRAD indicates whether the woman knew about using some "other" folkloric method as a method for family planning.

The meaning of "other" in this case depends on the specific response categories included in a given sample. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the "FPTYP" series of variables which report whether a contraceptive method is modern, traditional, or folkloric in a given sample to better discern the meaning of "other" in this case.

Comparability

Apart from slight differences in how this contraceptive method was labelled, FPKNOTRAD is largely comparable across samples.

Comparability - Standard DHS

Although questions on whether the woman has used a given contraceptive method are included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phases 1 to Phase 5 and in all phases of the standard recode manual, FPEVUSTRAD is a country-specific response category that is not included in any of the standard DHS modules.
