Description

FPHOMVISITY (V393) indicates whether the woman was visited by a health worker who talked to her about family planning in the 12 months preceding the interview.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, FPHOMVISITY (V393) uses country-specific terms for the health worker. However, for all samples, the question focuses on whether the visiting health worker discussed family planning.

The intent of the question is whether the woman was visited at home, but only a few samples make this explicit (noted below). Some samples (discussed below) used a reference period other than 12 months.

Comparability - Standard DHS

FPHOMVISITY (V393) is included in Phase III forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

The standard question wording for Phase III is:

Were you visited by a family planning program worker in the last 12 months?

For Phases IV through VI, this changes slightly, but not substantively, to:

In the last 12 months, were you visited by a fieldworker who talked to you about family planning?"

Beginning in Phase VII, the standard question is:

In the last 12 months, were you visited by a fieldworker?

Users should note that the Phase VII question does not specify whether the fieldworker talked to the respondent about family planning. Responses to the follow-up question ("Did the fieldworker talk to you about family planning?") can be found in FPHOMTALKFP (V393A).

Comparability — Bangladesh [top]

For Bangladesh 2018, women were asked whether they were visited by a fieldworker who talked to them about family planning or gave them a family planning method during a 6-month reference period. Additionally, the response categories for this variable included three separate categories: whether the fieldworker exclusively talked to the woman about family planning, gave the woman a family planning method, or talked to the woman about family planning and gave her a family planning method. These response categories are consolidated in FPHOMVISITY to create a more comprehensive response category. Researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories should use FPHOMVISITYD.

For Egypt 2000, 2003, 2005, and 2008, women were asked about home visits by a family planning worker during a 6-month reference period.

Comparability — Eswatini (Swaziland) [top]

For Swaziland/Eswatini 2006, the question asks whether the woman was visited by a rural health motivator (RHM) or a CBD (community-based distribution agent) who talked to her about family planning.

Comparability — India [top]

For India 1998, the questions asks whether a "health or family planning worker visited you at home." A follow-question ascertained whether the worker discussed family planning with the woman.

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

For Zimbabwe 1994, the question asks whether the woman was visited by a CBD (community-based distribution agent). While it was implied that that the visit was to discuss family planning, this was not explicitly asked.
