Description

FPKNOANYSRCS (V380) reports the source from which the woman knows contraceptives can be obtained. This variable is constructed from a series of questions, and answers were recorded using standard responses and codes that are consistent across countries and phases.

Because the questions used to construct this variable changed slightly across phases, IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Comparability tab.

Comparability

Apart from slight universe differences and slight variation in question wording (see below), FPKNOANYSRCS (V380) is largely comparable across samples.

Comparability - Standard DHS

FPKNOANYSRCS (V380) is constructed from a series of questions included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 2 forward. The exact questions used changed slightly over time.

Per the standard DHS recode manual for Phase 2, this variable is constructed in the following way:

For current users of modern methods, it is the source of that method. For women who are not currently using any method, but intend to use a modern method in the next 12 months, it is the source of the method they would prefer to use. For all other women, it is a source from which they know they can obtain family planning methods, if they know any source.

In Phase III forward, the process of making this variable is slightly changed:

For current users of modern methods, it is the source of that method. For women who are not currently using any method, it is a source from which they know they can obtain family planning methods, if they know any source.
