Codes and Frequencies
Description
For women using a modern method of contraception, FPLASTSRCS (V327) reports the type of facility that was the source of the last contraceptive method used by the woman. This variable was constructed by recoding country-specific responses into a few standard categories that are consistent across samples.
When children are chosen as the unit of analysis, the woman respondent indicates the mother of the child.
Comparability
Along with universe differences and question wording differences, FPLASTSRCS (V327) has some minor comparability issues.
Samples differ slightly in standard categories--most notably in the addition of the "NGO" category as separate from other private sector sources--after the 1980s, reflecting changes in the standard DHS questionnaire (see below).
Only women using modern contraceptive methods were asked about their source.
In general, the DHS classifies the following methods as "modern": the Pill, IUD, injections, diaphragm, condom, female sterilization, male sterilization, implants, female condom, foam/jelly, lactational amenorrhea, and emergency contraception. However, some samples (indicated on the Universe tab) excluded women using prolonged breastfeeding (lactational amenorrhea) from FPLASTSRCS.
Comparability - Standard DHS
FPLASTSRCS (V327) is constructed from questions included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 1 forward. For Phase 2 forward, the standard coding categories for this variable changed to separate non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from other private sector sources. This limits comparability between Phase 1 and other phases.
