Description
For women who are not currently using a contraceptive method, FPNONBD1 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported a public medical college hospital as a source of family planning. This response category is country-specific to Bangladesh.
Some samples in the "FPNON" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
FPNONBD1 is combined with FPNONBD2 (specialized government hospital) and FPNONBD3 (public district hospital) in FPNONPUBHOS (all public hospitals) for the 2011 Bangladesh sample. Additionally, FPNONBD1 is combined with FPNONBD3 in FPNONPUBHOS for the 2014 Bangladesh sample.
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using FPNONBD1 are encouraged to review FPNONPUBHOS for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
Apart from slight universe differences, FPNONBD1 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question about where family planning can be obtained for women not currently using a method is included in Phase IV forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Although FPNONBD1 is a country-specific response, it is combined with other responses in FPNONPUBHOS, a standard variable that encompasses all public hospitals as sources of family planning. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of FPNONBD1 or the Comparability tab of FPNONPUBHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for Bangladesh 2011 and 2014.
