Description

For women who are not currently using a method of contraception, FPNONPRIVDR (V3A00L) indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported a "private doctor" as a source of family planning.

Some samples in the "FPNON" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of private doctors that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in this variable.

Comparability

In addition to universe differences, the wording of this response category varies slightly across samples. Most commonly, this response option was categorized under a "private medical sector" header and was worded as "private doctor" or "doctor's office." As noted below, however, some samples diverged from this standard convention.

In the 2011 and 2014 Bangladesh surveys, there are separate categories for "qualified doctor" and "unqualified doctor." Because this variable focuses on all private doctors, these two responses are consolidated in FPNONPRIVDR to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • Qualified doctor is listed as FPNONBD4 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Unqualified doctor is listed as FPNONBD5 in IPUMS-DHS
