Description
For women who are not currently using a method of contraception, FPNONSHOP (V3A00S) indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported a shop as a source of family planning.
Some samples in the "FPNON" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of shops/retailers that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in this variable.

Comparability
In addition to universe differences, the wording of this response category varies slightly across samples. Most commonly, this response option was categorized under an "other source" header and was worded as "shop" or "shop/kiosk." However, some countries diverge from this standard convention, and, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
FPNONSHOP (V3A00S) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phases IV and V.
Comparability — Bangladesh [top]
In the 2011 Bangladesh survey, this response category is worded as "grocery."
Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]
In the 2003 Burkina Faso survey, under the "other source" header, there are two separate categories for "shop" and "kiosk." Because this variable focuses on all shops/retailers, these two responses are consolidated in FPNONSHOP to create a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability — Madagascar [top]
In the 2003 and 2008 Madagascar surveys, under the "other source" header, there are two separate categories for "shop" and "kiosk." Because this variable focuses on all shops/retailers, these two responses are consolidated in FPNONSHOP to create a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability — Mali [top]
In the 2006 Mali survey, under the "other source" header, there are two separate categories for "shop" and "kiosk." Because this variable focuses on all shops/retailers, these two responses are consolidated in FPNONSHOP to create a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability — Niger [top]
In the 2012 Niger survey, under the "other source" header, there are two separate categories for "shop" and "road kiosk." Because this variable focuses on all shops/retailers, these two responses are consolidated in FPNONSHOP to create a more comprehensive response category.
The 2006 Niger survey includes three separate categories, including "shop," "kiosk," and "street vendor." Because the sample includes the categories as separate variables and consolidates the categories into V3A00S, supplemental programming from IPUMS-DHS was not necessary for this sample.
Categorization of this type of source varied between the Niger samples. While Niger 2006 identified "kiosk" as an "other" source, the Niger 2012 sample categorized it as a "private medical" source.
Comparability — Rwanda [top]
In the 2014 Rwandan survey, the "other" source header included a single category for "kiosk/shop/bar."
Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]
In the 2010 Zimbabwe survey, under a "retail outlet" header, there are five separate categories for "general dealer," "service station," "supermarket," "tuck shop," and "other retail outlet." Because this variable focuses on all shops/retailers, these five responses are consolidated in FPNONSHOP to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:
- General dealer is listed as FPNONZW2 in IPUMS-DHS
- Service station is listed as FPNONZW3 in IPUMS-DHS
- Supermarket is listed as FPNONZW4 in IPUMS-DHS
- Tuck shop is listed as FPNONZW5 in IPUMS-DHS
- Other retail outlet is listed as FPNONZW6 in IPUMS-DHS
In the 2005 Zimbabwe survey, tuck shop (FPNONZW5), service station (FPNONZW3) and other retail outlet (FPNONZW6) are consolidated in FPNONSHOP.
