Description
FPNOWUSABS (V307_12) indicates whether the woman is now using abstinence to delay or avoid getting pregnant.
Users should be careful to distinguish this variable from FPNOWUSRHY, which refers to the rhythm method (periodic abstinence based on the woman's menstrual period).
IPUMS-DHS users may also be interested in FPMETHNOW (V312), which reports the woman's current contraceptive method.
Comparability
FPNOWUSABS (V307_12) has no comparability problems.
Some surveys did not specifically ask about abstinence, but respondents could volunteer this method when asked about "any other methods."
Comparability - Standard DHS
FPNOWUSABS (V307_12) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 4 forward.
