Description

FPNOWUSCHRM indicates whether the woman is now using a charm or amulet, a traditional contraceptive method that relies on wearing a talisman, to delay or avoid getting pregnant.

IPUMS-DHS users may also be interested in FPMETHNOW (V312), which reports the woman's current contraceptive method.

Comparability

Apart from differences in the universe and slight differences in question wording, FPNOWUSCHRM is largely comparable across samples.

Some surveys did not specifically ask about charms or amulets, but respondents could volunteer this method when asked about "any other methods."

Comparability - Standard DHS

A question about the woman's current contraceptive method is included in Phase IV forward of the standard DHS questionnaire, though FPNOWUSCHRM is a country-specific response and is not included in the standard DHS modules.
