Description

FPPRECALUSE (V385) indicates whether the respondent used any contraceptive method before, during, or after the first month of the calendar period. Below are the descriptions of each code:

  • 1 = Using a contraceptive method in the first month of the calendar.
  • 2 = Not using a contraceptive method in the first month of the calendar, but used a contraceptive method in the interval prior to the calendar. For women who had at least one birth before the start of the calendar, the interval is between the last birth prior to the start of the calendar and the start of the calendar. For women who had no births before the start of the calendar, the interval is any time before the start of the calendar.
  • 3 = Not using a contraceptive method in the first month of the calendar or in the interval prior to the calendar, but used a contraceptive method before the interval. Because of the definition of "interval" (see code "2"), this response category is limited to women who had at least one birth before the calendar.
  • 4 = Used a contraceptive method only after the first month of the calendar.
  • 5 = Never used a contraceptive method.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and variation in the length of time covered by the reproductive calendar, FPPRECALUSE (V385) is comparable across samples.

Comparability - Standard DHS

FPPRECALUSE (V385) is included in Phase II of the standard DHS questionnaire for high contraceptive prevalence countries (using the Model "A" standard questionnaire with reproductive calendar questions).
