Description
FPTYPOMOD (V304A_17) reports whether the unspecified "other modern" methods are considered to be a modern method, a traditional method, or a folkloric method of family planning in a given sample. The meaning of "other" must be interpreted relative to the specific family planning methods included in a particular sample.
In the DHS, generally modern methods are the pill, IUD, injections, diaphragm, condom, female sterilization, male sterilization, implants, female condom, foam/jelly, lactational amenorrhea, and emergency contraception. Traditional methods are periodic abstinence (rhythm), withdrawal, and abstinence. Folkloric methods are the category "other" and country-specific methods (such as herbs or amulet), which vary across samples.
IPUMS-DHS users may be interested in the complementary variable FPTYPNOW (V313), which indicates whether the woman's current contraceptive method is modern, traditional, or folkloric.
Comparability
FPTYPOMOD (V304A_17) has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
FPTYPOMOD (V304A_17) is included in Phase VII forward of the standard DHS recode. It is also part of a series on types of family planning methods, which is included in Phase II forward of the standard DHS recode.
The complementary variable FPTYPOTRAD (V304_10) indicates whether the other traditional or folkloric family planning methods are considered modern, traditional, or folkloric methods. Before Phase VII, the standard DHS women's questionnaire did not distinguish between other modern and other traditional methods; responses to the more general "other method" are found in FPKNOOM.
