Description

For women who are not currently using a method of contraception and are at risk of pregnancy, FPYNOTMAR (V3A08A) indicates whether they reported "not married"
in response to an open-ended question about reasons for not using contraception.

Due to universe differences and the use of supplemental programming, IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Comparability tab.

Comparability

In addition to slight differences in question wording, significant universe differences may affect the comparability of FPYNOTMAR (V3A08A).

The meaning of at risk of pregnancy varies across samples. For most samples, women were considered to be at risk of pregnancy if they were not infecund, not sterilized, and not pregnant at the time of the interview. For a minority of samples, IPUMS-DHS also excludes from the universe women who have never had sex. In the original DHS data, these women were coded to the response category "never had sex" for FERTPREF, PREFTIMECH, PREFTIMECHGP, and KIDDESIRE. IPUMS-DHS used supplemental programming to exclude these cases of women who never had sex from the universe to make the data more consistent across variables and to ensure that the universes are empirically accurate. Countries of interest are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

FPYNOTMAR (V3A08A) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase IV forward. Standard question wording varies slightly across phases.

Beginning in Phase VII, women who have not had sex in the last 12 months were not asked why they were not using contraception.

Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]

For Burkina Faso 2010, IPUMS-DHS used supplemental programming to exclude women who have never had sex from FPYNOTMAR. Therefore, women at risk of pregnancy include women who were not infecund, sterilized, or pregnant, and who have had sex.

Comparability — India [top]

Women who have never had sex are excluded from FPYNOTMAR for the 2005 India sample. This exclusion was made during the DHS processing and was not due to supplemental programming from IPUMS-DHS.

Comparability — Malawi [top]

For Malawi 2004, IPUMS-DHS used supplemental programming to exclude women who have never had sex from FPYNOTMAR. Therefore, women at risk of pregnancy include women who were not infecund, sterilized, or pregnant, and who have had sex.

Comparability — Rwanda [top]

For Rwanda 2010, IPUMS-DHS used supplemental programming to exclude women who have never had sex from FPYNOTMAR. Therefore, women at risk of pregnancy include women who were not infecund, sterilized, or pregnant, and who have had sex.

Comparability — Tanzania [top]

For Tanzania 2010, IPUMS-DHS used supplemental programming to exclude women who have never had sex from FPYNOTMAR. Therefore, women at risk of pregnancy include women who were not infecund, sterilized, or pregnant, and who have had sex.
