Description
HANDWASHPL (HV230) indicates whether the household has a place for handwashing. The related variable HANDWASHPLOBS indicates whether the household's place for handwashing was observed by the interviewer.
The information in HANDWASHPL is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors. Researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable when women, children, or births are the unit of analysis, and using the HHRESIDENT variable when household members are the unit of analysis.

Comparability
Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, HANDWASHPL (HV230) is comparable across most samples. Most, but not all, samples specify whether the place for handwashing is in the dwelling/plot/yard or somewhere else. To accommodate the difference in detail, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for HANDWASHPL.
Only samples with potential comparability issues are discussed below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
HANDWASHPL (HV230) is included in the standard DHS household questionnaire for Phase IV only.
Comparability — Egypt [top]
Unlike most samples, the 2000 and 2005 Egyptian samples provide only a yes/no answer about whether the household has a place for handwashing, with no detail about its location.
Comparability — Rwanda [top]
The 2000 Rwandan sample provides only a yes/no answer about whether the household has a place for handwashing in the dwelling, yard, or plot.
