Along with universe differences, samples deviated considerably from the standard question phrasing for HASSOAP (V118).
Only those countries with comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
Only the standard questionnaire for DHS Phase 1 asked, "Do you have, right now, a cake of soap on the premises?"
The 1989 Kenyan survey asked about "bathing soap or washing soap" rather than "a cake of soap."
The 1987 Mali survey asked about usual practice and referred specifically to "hand washing" (i.e., "Do you usually have soap for hand washing in this household?")
