Description
HCFMW2 indicates whether the woman reported a "mission health center" as a source for female condoms. This response category is country-specific to Malawi.
Some samples in the "HCF" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCFMW2 is combined with HCFMW3 (mission hospital), HCFMW4 (mission mobile clinic), and HCFMW9 (mission door-to-door) in HCFPRIVMIS (all faith-based health facilities) for the 2010 Malawi sample.
Additionally, HCFMW2 is combined with HCFMW3 and HCFMW4 in HCMPRIVMIS for the 2000 and 2004 Malawi samples.
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCFMW2 are encouraged to review HCFPRIVMIS for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
Apart from differences in response categories, HCFMW2 is comparable across samples. For Malawi 2000 and 2004, the header is labeled "mission" with "health center" as a response. For Malawi 2010, the header combines "mission" and "Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM)," with "health center" as a response.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for female condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases IV forward.
Though HCFMW2 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCFPRIVMIS, a variable that encompasses all faith-based facilities as sources of female condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCFMW2 or the Comparability tab of HCFPRIVMIS for more information on the specific categories combined for Malawi 2000, 2004 and 2010.
