Description
HCFNGO indicates whether the woman reported an "NGO," or non-governmental organization, as a source for female condoms.
Some samples in the "HCF" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of NGOs that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. HCFNGO is concerned with whether the woman reported any NGO as a source for female condoms. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories included for countries of interest.

Comparability
Along with universe differences, HCFNGO has some contextual factors regarding question wording that should be noted by researchers. This survey context broadly applies to the "source for female condom" series. For discussion of this topic, see the comparability section of HCFDK.
Additionally, HCFNGO varies slightly in response wording. Most commonly, the response is worded as "NGO," but some samples include multiple, specific NGO sources. In the latter case, multiple categories were consolidated to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for female condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases IV forward. However, HCFNGO is country-specific and not part of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Comparability — Eswatini (Swaziland) [top]
In the 2006 Eswatini/Swaziland sample, under the "NGO" header, there are separate categories for "FLAS (Family Life Association of Swaziland)" and "Other NGO." Because HCMNGO focuses on all NGOs, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:
Comparability — Ethiopia [top]
In the 2011 Ethiopia sample, under the "NGO" header, there are separate categories for "NGO health facility," "voluntary community health workers [VCHW]," and "other NGO." Because HCFNGO focuses on all NGOs, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:
Comparability — Myanmar [top]
In the 2015 Myanmar survey, there are separate categories for "Marie Stopes International," Myanmar Red Cross," "Population Services International/Myanmar," "Myanmar Medical Association," and "other NGO." As HCFNGO focuses on all NGO sources, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:
Comparability — Togo [top]
In the 2013 Togo survey, under the "Private Medical Sector" header, this response category is worded as "NGO/Association."
