Description

HCFSHOP (V762BS) indicates whether the woman reported a "shop" as a source for female condoms.

Some samples in the "HCF" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of shops/retailers that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in HCFSHOP.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCFSHOP (V762BS) has some contextual factors regarding question wording that should be noted by researchers. This survey context broadly applies to the "source for female condom" series. For discussion of this topic, see the comparability section of HCFDK.

The response category has some wording variation across surveys. Only surveys that depart from "shop" are discussed below. The category is typically organized under the "other source" or "other private source" header in the survey.

For most samples, the variable was a part of a question that asked the respondent to list all known sources for female condoms. Some countries, discussed below, recorded only the first response, which may affect the comparability of those samples.

See country-specific variables in the HCF- series for potentially comparable data.

Comparability - Standard DHS

HCFSHOP (V762BS) first appears in phase IV of the Standard DHS. It is removed in phase VI of the standard DHS questionnaire and replaced with "Country-specific other private sector."

Comparability — Malawi [top]

For Malawi 2000, only the first response was recorded. Although the respondent may have known of a "shop" as an additional source for female condoms, only her first response was documented.

Comparability — Myanmar [top]

In the 2015 Myanmar survey, there are two separate categories for "shop" and "betel nut shop." Because this variable focuses on all shops/retailers, these two responses are consolidated in HCFSHOP to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • Shop is listed as HCFMM9 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Betel nut shop is listed as HCFMM10 in IPUMS-DHS

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

In the 2010 Zimbabwe survey, under the "Retail Outlet" header, there are separate categories for "general dealer," "supermarket," "tuck shop," "service station," and "other retail." Because HCFSHOP focuses on all shops/retailers, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • General dealer is listed as HCFZW6 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Supermarket is listed as HCFZW10 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Tuck shop is listed as HCFZW9 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Service station is listed as HCFZW8 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Other retail is listed as HCFZW11 in IPUMS-DHS

In the 2015 Zimbabwe survey, under the "Retail Outlet" header, there are separate categories for "general dealer," "supermarket/tuck shop," "service station," and "bottle store/bar." As with the 2010 survey, these categories are consolidated in HCFSHOP as well as preserved in the country-specific variables HCFZW6 (general dealer), HCFZW12 (supermarket/tuck shop), HCFZW13 (bottle store/bar), and HCFZW8 (service station).
