Description
HCFTZ6 indicates whether the woman reported a public regional hospital as a source for female condoms. This response category is country-specific to Tanzania.
Some samples in the "HCF" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
HCFTZ6 is combined with HCFTZ5 (public referral hospital) and HCFTZ7 (public district hospital) in HCFPUBHOS (all public hospitals) for the 2004 and 2010 Tanzania samples.
Additionally, HCFTZ6 is combined with HCFTZ7 in HCFPUBHOS for the 1996 and 1999 Tanzania samples.
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using HCFTZ6 are encouraged to review HCFPUBHOS for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
Apart from slight universe differences, HCFTZ6 is largely comparable across samples. For most Tanzania samples, the variable was a part of a question that asked the respondent to list all known sources for female condoms. However, in the 1999 Tanzania sample, only the first response was recorded. Although the respondent may have known of some other place as a source for female condoms, only her first response was documented.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question on known sources for female condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases IV forward.
Though HCFTZ6 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCFPUBHOS, a variable that encompasses all public hospitals as sources of female condoms. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of HCFTZ6 or the Comparability tab of HCFPUBHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for Tanzania 1996, 1999, 2004, and 2010.
