HCFTZ7 indicates whether the woman reported a public district hospital as a source for female condoms. This response category is country-specific to Tanzania.

Some samples in the "HCF" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

HCFTZ7 is combined with HCFTZ5 (public referral hospital) and HCFTZ6 (public regional hospital) in HCFPUBHOS (all public hospitals) for the 2004 and 2010 Tanzania samples.

Additionally, HCFTZ7 is combined with HCFTZ6 in HCFPUBHOS for the 1996 and 1999 Tanzania samples.

Comparability

Apart from slight universe differences, HCFTZ7 is largely comparable across samples. For most Tanzania samples, the variable was a part of a question that asked the respondent to list all known sources for female condoms. However, in the 1999 Tanzania sample, only the first response was recorded. Although the respondent may have known of some other place as a source for female condoms, only her first response was documented.

An open-ended question on known sources for female condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases IV forward.

Though HCFTZ7 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in HCFPUBHOS, a variable that encompasses all public hospitals as sources of female condoms.
