Description

HCMOTHDRUG indicates whether the woman reported an informal drug or street vendor as a source for male condoms.

Users should be careful to distinguish this variable from HCMPUBDRUG and HCMPRIVDRUG, country-specific variables that refer to public drug sources and private, formal drug sources, respectively.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCMOTHDRUG has some variation in question wording that broadly applies to the "source for male condom" series. For discussion of question wording in this variable series, see the comparability section of HCMDK.

The wording of this response category varies slightly across samples, and the responses are generally organized under the "other" heading in the survey. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Survey Text tab for samples of interest.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward. HCMOTHDRUG is country-specific and not part of the standard DHS questionnaire.
