Comparability

Along with universe differences, HCMPUBDRUG has some variation in question wording that broadly applies to the "source for male condom" series. For discussion of question wording in this variable series, see the comparability section of HCMDK.

Most commonly, this response category is organized under the "Public Sector" or "Public Medical Sector" header in the survey, and is worded as "dispensary" or "government dispensary." Some samples worded this response category as "pharmacy." HCMPUBDRUG is ultimately concerned with whether the woman mentioned any public, formal drug source as a source for male condoms.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on known sources for male condoms is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases III forward. HCMPUBDRUG is country-specific and not part of the standard DHS questionnaire.

For discussion of differences between phases in this variable series, see the Comparability - Standard DHS tab of HCMDK.

Comparability — Benin [top]

In the 2006 Benin survey, under the "Public Sector" header, this response category is worded as "community pharmacy."

Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]

In the 1993 Burkina Faso survey, under the "Public Sector" header, this response category is worded as "community pharmaceutical depot."

Comparability — Chad [top]

In the 1996, 2004, and 2014 Chad surveys, under the "Public Sector" header, this response category is worded as "Hospital or health center pharmacy."

Comparability — Togo [top]

In the 1998 Togo survey, there are separate categories for "state pharmacy" and "dispensary/infirmary." Because HCMPUBDRUG focuses on all public pharmacies and dispensaries, these responses are consolidated in this variable to create a more comprehensive response category. For researchers interested in preserving these country-specific categories:

  • State pharmacy is listed as HCMTG4 in IPUMS-DHS
  • Dispensary/infirmary is listed as HCMTG5 in IPUMS-DHS
