Description
HIVBLOODTEST (V473B) indicates whether the person's blood was drawn and tested for HIV antibodies or, if not, why the person's blood was not tested. All "no" responses have a common first digit of "2," while the second digit reveals the reason (e.g., consent refused, blood sample insufficient or damaged).
Comparability — Index

Comparability
Along with universe differences, HIVBLOODTEST (V473B) differs in the detail of responses about why the person's blood was not tested. Some samples include a response for "sample not tested, lost, or damaged," while other samples placed these cases into an unspecified "other" category. To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding, with all "no" answers sharing a first digit of "2" and the reason identified in the second digit.
Comparability - Standard DHS
HIVBLOODTEST (V473B) is a standard recode variable in the DHS beginning in Phase V.

According to the Final Report for the 2005 India survey, no estimate of HIV prevalence is provided for Nagaland, the sixth highest HIV prevalence state, due to strong local opposition to the collection of blood samples.
