HUSB1INHOME indicates whether the female respondent's first husband lived with her after marriage. This variable combines women who are currently married to their first husband and women who are not currently married to their first husband. For women who are currently married to their first husband, this variable indicates whether the woman's first husband is currently living with her. For women who are not currently married to their first husband, this variable indicates whether the woman's husband always lived with her after marriage.
The related variable HUSBINHOME (V504) indicates whether the female respondent's current husband/partner (regardless of the number of unions for the female respondent) lives with the woman or lives elsewhere.
IPUMS-DHS uses 2-digit composite coding for HUSB1INHOME. The first digit indicates whether the woman lived with her first husband after marriage (0 for yes, 1 for no). The second digit provides additional detail (e.g., code "11" for "No, only lived with husband some of the time").
