Description
For women who have received an injection from a health professional in the last 6 to 12 months, INJNEWNEDL (V480) reports whether the person who gave them their last injection used a syringe and needle from a new, unopened package.
There is some variation in how the "person who gave the last injection" is described. See Comparability.

Comparability
Along with universe differences, INJNEWNEDL (V480) has some variation in question wording, and the meaning implied by preceding questions that may affect comparability for this variable across samples.
The majority of surveys ask, "The last time you had an injection from a health worker, did the person who gave you that injection take the syringe and needle from a new, unopened package?" [emphasis added]. These surveys follow the phase VI and VII standard questionnaires.
Other surveys ask a question about the last time the woman had an injection from a health professional, and then ask the question regarding the use of a clean syringe specifically regarding their aforementioned last experience with a health professional. These surveys follow the phase V standard questionnaire.
A third group of surveys does not specify whether this question refers to an injection performed by a health professional, specifically. Although typically only women who have had an injection by a health professional in the last 6 to 12 months are in the universe, the question simply asks, "The last time you had an injection, did the person who gave you that injection take the syringe and needle from a new, unopened package?" These surveys are noted in the country-specific comparability text below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
INJNEWNEDL (V480) is first introduced in phase V of the standard DHS, using the question wording, "Did the person who gave you that injection take the syringe and needle from a new, unopened package?" The question wording changes slightly in phase VI, to "The last time you got an injection from a health worker, did he/she take the syringe and needle from a new, unopened package?" The question wording is consistent in subsequent standard DHS surveys.
