Codes and Frequencies
Description
NEWSFQ (V157) reports how often the woman usually reads a newspaper or magazine (not at all, less than once a week, once a week or more often, or almost every day).
For a potentially comparable variable asking whether the woman reads the newspaper or a magazine at least once a week, see NEWSWK (V109). For a variable bridging NEWSFQ and NEWSWK, see NEWSBRIG.

Comparability
The possible response categories for NEWSFQ (V157) change across phases. See the Survey Text tab for exact question wording.
To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for this variable. The answer "Not at all" is coded 0. For women who report reading the newspaper, IPUMS-DHS uses a 2-digit coding system, where the first digit indicates whether the respondent reads the newspaper less than once a week (coded 10) or more than once a week (20). The second digit displays additional information available for some samples, with code 21 indicating "At least once a week" and 22 indicating "Almost every day."
Comparability - Standard DHS
NEWSFQ (V157) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire beginning in Phase IV. While the question wording for NEWSFQ (V157) remains the same across phases, the response categories differ. In Phases IV and V of the standard DHS questionnaire, the response categories are: Almost every day, At least once a week, Less than once a week, and Not at all. In Phase VI, the category "Almost every day" was removed, so the highest frequency that can be reported is "At least once a week."
A similar question appears in phases I through III, where respondents were asked whether they read the newspaper or a magazine at least once a week (NEWSWK (V109)).

The 2015 Angola survey asks, "Do you read a newspaper or magazine more than once a week, at least once a week, or not at all?"
Comparability — Jordan [top]
The 1990 Jordan survey asks, "Do you read a newspaper or magazine: rarely, sometimes, or frequently?" To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS coded the "Rarely" responses as "Not at all" (code "0"), the "Sometimes" responses as "Less than once a week" (code "21"), and the "Frequently" responses as "At least once a week" (code "22").
The 1997 Jordan survey asks, "How often do you read a newspaper or magazine? Would you say: Every day, 3-5 times a week, once or twice a week, once a month, few times a year, never, don't know?" To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS coded "Every day" and "3-5 times a week" responses as "Almost every day (code "22"), "Once or twice a week" as "At least once a week" (code "21"), "Once a month" as "Less than once a week" (code "10"), and "Few times a year" and "Never" as "Not at all" (code "0").
Comparability — Pakistan [top]
The 2012 Pakistan survey asks, "Do you read a newspaper or magazine daily, at least once a week, occasionally, or not at all?" To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS coded the "Daily" responses as "Almost every day" (code "22") and the "Occasionally" responses as "Less than once a week" (code "10").
Comparability — Senegal [top]
The 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016 Senegal surveys ask, "Do you read a newspaper, the internet, or a magazine at least once a week, less than once a week, or not at all?" [emphasis added].
Comparability — Yemen [top]
The 2013 Yemen survey asks, "Do you read a newspaper or magazine every day, at least once a week, or not at all?" To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS coded the "Daily" responses as "Almost every day" (code "22").
