Codes and Frequencies
Description
NEXTKIDSEXPREF reports the preferred gender of the respondent's next child: boy, girl, either, or some other response (such as "up to God").
Comparability
Along with universe differences, NEXTKIDSEXPREF varies across samples in terms of whether an "other response" category was included. Presumably such "other" responses were combined with "either" for samples lacking this "other" response category. IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding to give both of these non-gendered answers a common first digit of 3 and distinguishes between "either" and "some other response" in the second digit.
Comparability - Standard DHS
NEXTKIDSEXPREF is a country-specific variable not included in the standard DHS questionnaire.
