Description
PREGTERMTYP reports how the respondent's most recent pregnancy termination ended: as a stillbirth, miscarriage, abortion, or, in some samples, via "menstrual regulation" (see Comparability).
Comparability
Along with universe differences, PREGTERMTYP varies across samples in terms of whether the option of "menstrual regulation" was included. Bangladesh survey forms include "menstrual regulation" as a mean of family planning in the contraceptive table and define the term as follows:
Researchers must decide for themselves how to classify "menstrual regulation," relative to the other responses. In some cases, menstrual regulation would have been technically a form of abortion, but it may have been conceived of quite differently by health practitioners and women respondents, as a means of treating "blocked menstruation." While pregnancy may be a cause of missed menstrual periods, other causes include stress, major weight loss or excessive exercise, thyroid irregularity, and hormonal imbalance.
Comparability - Standard DHS
PREGTERMTYP is a country-specific variable not included in the standard DHS questionnaire.
