Description
SALTRESULT (V166) reports the results of the salt iodine test, with information recorded on the individual person's record.
The following related variables, taken from the household record, report the results of the salt iodine test and are separated according to the type of test:
- SALTEST1 (HV234) reports the iodine level in the household's cooking salt, using grouped values of 0 PPM, 7 PPM, 15 PPM or less, 15PPM or more, and 30 PPM.
- SALTEST2 reports the iodine level in the household's cooking salt, using grouped values of 0 PPM, 1-25 PPM, 26-50 PPM, 51-75 PPM, and 76-100 PPM.
- SALTEST3 (HV234A) indicates whether the household's cooking salt tested positive for iodine.
Comparability
In addition to universe differences and slight differences in question wording, SALTRESULT (V166) includes different response categories across samples.
Comparability - Standard DHS
SALTRESULT (V166) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase IV forward.
In Phase IV of the standard questionnaire, the listed iodine levels were "0 ppm (No iodine)," "7 ppm," "15 ppm," and "30 ppm." Because there are many kinds of iodine testing kits available, the standard questionnaire noted that the proper test kit should be selected in each country depending on the type of iodine additive used in the country and the gradations (in PPM) required by that country. As a result, the response categories should be modified to be consistent with the particular test kits used.
In Phases V and VII of the standard questionnaire, the listed iodine levels were "0 ppm (No iodine)," "Below 15 PPM," and "15 PPM and above." The standard questionnaires noted that the proper test kit depends on the type of iodine additive used in the country (potassium iodate or potassium iodide). The test kits should have standard gradations at 0 PPM, below 15 PPM, and 15 PPM and above, according to the UNICEF standard cutoff point of 15 PPM for adequately iodized salt.
In Phase VI, the standard questionnaire only distinguishes between "Iodine present" and "No iodine."
