STEREOYN indicates whether the household has a stereo/hi-fi system. The complementary variable STEREONUM reports the number of stereos owned by the household.
The information in STEREOYN is taken from the household record, linked to the record of the woman respondent. This information applies to household residents, not temporary visitors, so researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable (with visitors coded "2").

STEREOYN varies slightly in question wording across samples. Some surveys asked whether the household "had" this appliance (which could encompass rental or borrowing as well as ownership), while other surveys asked whether the household "owned" this appliance.
Comparability - Standard DHS
STEREOYN is a country-specific household variable not included in the standard DHS questionnaire.
The Benin 2006 survey asked if the household "owned" a stereo, while the 2011 survey asked if the household "had" one.
