Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADBD9 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a private medical college hospital for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Bangladesh.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADBD9 is combined with STIADBD6 (private hospital/clinic), STIADBD7 (private qualified doctor), and STIADBD8 (private unqualified doctor) in STIADPRIVHOS (all private hospitals, clinics, and doctors) for the 2011 Bangladesh sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADBD9 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVHOS for a more comprehensive response category.

STIADBD9 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although STIADBD9 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPRIVHOS, a standard variable that encompasses all private hospitals, clinics, and doctors as sources for STI advice/treatment.
