Description
For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADBF3 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a maternal and child health center for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Burkina Faso.
Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
STIADBF3 is combined with STIADBF1 (public health center) and STIADBF2 (Center for Health and Social Advancement) in STIADPUBHC (all public health centers) for the 1998 Burkina Faso sample.
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADBF3 are encouraged to review STIADPUBHC for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
STIADBF3 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Though STIADBF3 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPUBHC, a standard variable that encompasses all public health centers as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADBF3 or the Comparability tab of STIADPUBHC for more information on the specific categories combined for the Burkina Faso samples.
