Description

STIADCF4 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the female respondent reported seeking advice or treatment from a private doctor the last time she experienced symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past year. This response category is country-specific to Central African Republic.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADCF4 (private doctor) is combined with STIADCF3 (private hospital/clinic) in STIADPRIVHOS (all private hospitals, clinics, and doctors) for the 1995 Central African Republic sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADCF4 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVHOS for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

STIADCF4 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although STIADCF4 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPRIVHOS, a standard variable that encompasses all private hospitals, clinics, and doctors as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADCF4 or the Comparability tab of STIADPRIVHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for the Central African Republic samples.
