Description
STIADCG4 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the female respondent reported seeking advice or treatment from some other traditional therapeutic source the last time she experienced symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past year. The meaning of "other" must be interpreted relative to the specific categories included in a particular sample.
This response category is country-specific to Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville.
Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
STIADCG4 (other traditional therapeutic source) is combined with STIADCG3 (traditional healer/therapist) in STIADPRIVHL (all traditional healers and herbalists) for the 2005 Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADCG4 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
STIADCG4 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V, and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Although STIADCG4 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPRIVHL, a standard variable that encompasses all traditional healers and herbalists as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADCG4 or the Comparability tab of STIADPRIVHL for more information on the specific categories combined for the Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville samples.
