Description
For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADFRNDYN indicates whether, in response to a closed-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a friend or relative for this problem.
IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Comparability tab and should be careful to distinguish this variable from STIADFRND, which includes samples that collected information through an open-ended question.
Comparability
Apart from universe differences and slight variation in question wording, STIADFRNDYN is largely comparable across most samples.
Most commonly, the surveys ask a series of closed-ended questions about specific sources of advice/treatment for STIs using the following wording:
An open-ended question about where the woman sought advice/treatment for an STI in the last 12 months is first included in Phase III, V, and VI of the standard DHS questionnaire. However, STIADFRNDYN and the convention of asking closed-ended questions about sources of STI treatment only appear in Phase IV of the Standard DHS. Given the different methods of obtaining this information across phases, samples from Phase IV are not combined with samples from Phases III, V, and VI.
