Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADGA6 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from an ambulatory treatment center for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Gabon.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADGA6 is combined with STIADGA5 (mother and child health center) in STIADPUBHC (all public health centers) for the 2012 Gabon samples. IPUMS DHS users interested in using STIADGA6 are encouraged to review STIADPUBHC for a more comprehensive response category.

For the 2019 Gabon sample, only ambulatory treatment center is included in STIADPUBHC. The 2019 Gabon sample is included here to enhance comparability.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, STIADGA6 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V, and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although STIADGA6 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPUBHC, a standard variable that encompasses all public health centers as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADGA6 or the Comparability tab of STIADPUBHC for more information on the specific categories combined for the 2012 and 2019 Gabon samples.
