Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADIA2 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a "vaidya, hakim, or homeopath" for this problem. This response category is country-specific to India.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADIA2 is combined with STIADIA1 (traditional healer) and STIADIA3 ("dai" or traditional birth attendant (TBA)) in STIADPRIVHL (all traditional healers) for the 2005 India sample.

IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADIA2 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

STIADIA2 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Though STIADIA2 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPRIVHL, a standard variable that encompasses all traditional practitioners/healers as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADIA2 or the Comparability tab of STIADPRIVHL for more information on the specific categories combined for the India samples.
