Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADLR3 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a private hospital or clinic for this problem. This response category is country-specific to Liberia.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADLR3 (private hospital/clinic) is combined with STIADLR4 (private doctor) in STIADPRIVHOS (private hospitals, clinics, and doctors) for the 2007 and 2013 Liberia samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADLR3 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVHOS for a more comprehensive response category.

STIADLR3 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although STIADLR3 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPRIVHOS, a standard variable that encompasses private hospitals, clinics, and doctors as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADLR3 or the Comparability tab of STIADPRIVHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for Liberia 2007 and 2013.
