Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADMM3 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from Population Services International/Myanmar (PSI/M). This response category is country-specific to Myanmar.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADMM3 is combined with STIADMM1 (Marie Stopes International), STIADMM2 (Myanmar Red Cross), STIADMM4 (Myanmar Medical Association), and STIADMM5 (other NGO) in STIADNGO (all NGOs) for the 2015 Myanmar sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADMM3 are encouraged to review STIADNGO for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

STIADMM3 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although STIADMM3 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADNGO, a standard variable that encompasses all NGOs as potential sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADMM3 or the Comparability tab of STIADNGO for more information on the specific categories combined for the 2015 Myanmar sample.
