Description

For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADPUBDRUG indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a public dispensary or pharmacy for this problem.

Users should be careful to distinguish this variable from STIADOTHDRUG and STIADPRIVDRUG, which refer to other, informal drug sources and private, formal drug sources, respectively.

Comparability

The wording of this response category varies slightly across samples. Some samples organized this response category under a "public sector" header and worded it as "dispensary," while others worded the category as "pharmacy." Because this STIADPUBDRUG focuses on all public drug sources, "dispensary" and "pharmacy" are both included in this variable. Samples that significantly diverge from these standard conventions are noted below.

IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Survey Text tab for samples of interest.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman sought advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V, and VI in the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although responses in this variable are country-specific and not included in the standard DHS modules, they are integrated in STIADPUBDRUG to increase comparability across samples.

Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]

In the 1998 Burkina Faso survey, under the "Public Sector" header, this response category is worded as "community pharmaceutical depot."

Comparability — Chad [top]

In the 1996 and 2014 Chad surveys, under the "Public Sector" header, this response category is worded as "hospital or health center pharmacy."
