Codes and Frequencies
Description
For residents of households with shared toilet facilities, TOILSHARNUMG reports the number of other households sharing their toilet, with grouped input values. IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding to accommodate the (differing) grouped values; see Comparability.
The information in TOILSHARNUMG is taken from the household record, linked to the record of the woman respondent. This information applies to household residents, not temporary visitors, so researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable (with visitors coded "2").
Comparability
Along with universe differences, TOILSHARNUMG must accommodate input values of grouped data with inconsistent groupings. IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding with 3 digits to allow for comparisons across samples without losing detail. The first digit distinguishes responses of "Fewer than 5" (code 100) from "5 or more" (code 200). The second and third digits distinguish smaller groupings (e.g., One to two = 110) and single values (e.g., One = 111).
Some of the source variables for TOILSHARNUMG focus on the number of other households using the toilet; others report the total number of households using the facility. IPUMS-DHS converts these values into a consistent measure of the number of other households sharing the household's toilet. Households that do not share a toilet, or that have no facility at all, are not in the universe for TOILSHARNUMG.
Comparability - Standard DHS
TOILSHARNUMG is based on a standard household variable (HV238) expressed as "number of households sharing toilet" (not, as in IPUMS-DHS, the number of other households sharing the household's toilet) for Phase V forward.
