Description
VIDEO indicates whether the household had video equipment, variously described as "a video," "a video player," "a video recorder," or "a video deck."
The related variable DVDVCD includes equipment for playing videos as well as DVD and CD players for some samples.

Comparability
Along with universe differences, VIDEO differs across samples in question wording. Several surveys asked, "Does your household have a video?," which presumably refers to equipment for playing or recording videos. Other samples with different question wording are discussed below.
The information in VIDEO is taken from the household record, linked to the record of the woman respondent. This information applies to household residents, not temporary visitors, so researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable (with visitors coded "2").

VIDEO is a country-specific variable not included in the standard DHS questionnaire.
Comparability — Benin [top]
The 2011 Benin survey asked, "Does your household have a video recorder?"
Comparability — Egypt [top]
The 1988 Egyptian survey asked, "Are any of the following items found in the dwelling unit: A video?" The 2005 and 2008 Egyptian surveys asked, "Does your household have a video or DVD player?" The other Egyptian samples asked, "Does your household have a video?"
Comparability — Ghana [top]
The 1993 Ghana survey asked whether the household had "a functioning video." The remaining Ghanaian surveys dropped the term "functioning" and referred to "a video deck."
