Description

WEALTHQUR (V190A) refers to the relative wealth (urban- and rural-specific) of the household where the woman respondent lives, divided into quintiles from the poorest (code "1") to the richest (code "5"). A code of "1" indicates the female respondent's household is in the poorest quintile of rural households or the poorest quintile of urban households. The related variable URBAN (V025) indicates whether the woman's de facto residence was in an urban or rural location.

According to the DHS Recode Manual for Phase VII,

As a response to criticism that a single wealth index […] is too urban in its construction and not able to distinguish the poorest of the poor from other poor households, this variable provides an urban- and rural-specific wealth index.

For additional information about the calculation and meaning of the wealth index, users should consult the Wealth Index summary from The DHS Program website and/or the DHS Comparative Report on The DHS Wealth Index.

The complementary variable WEALTHSUR (V191A) reports the wealth index factor score for urban/rural for the woman's household in a specific sample.
The variables used to calculate wealth index quintiles and the level of wealth implied by a specific ranking are sample-specific. See Comparability.

Comparability

The general meaning of WEALTHQUR (V190A) is consistent across samples, but the variables used to calculate the wealth index quintiles and the level of wealth implied by a specific quintile-ranking are country- and survey-specific. Thus, for example, a given set of household amenities and services could place a household in the top quintile in a low-resource country but in the middle quintile in a wealthier country. WEALTHQUR should thus be interpreted as the relative economic standing of the woman's household within the type of location (urban or rural) of a specific country at a particular point in time.

Comparability - Standard DHS

WEALTHQUR (V190A) is included in Phase VII forward of the standard DHS recode.
