GEO_NP2016 reports the region of Nepal where the respondent was interviewed, using provinces as the units.
Other sample years for Nepal have their own sample-specific geography variables. The 2016 Nepal sample was included in integrated geographic variables, GEO_NP1996_2016 and GEOALT_NP1996_2016, which provide spatially consistent units over time.
A GIS map for GEO_NP2016 (in shapefile format) can be downloaded from the DHS Program Spatial Data Repository Boundaries page.
Note that in 2015, the administrative divisions of Nepal were reorganized into seven provinces with entirely different boundaries than were reported in the previous samples. Prior to 2015, five development regions were the first-level administrative divisions for Nepal.
